THE SIBERIAN WORLD-AROUND TRAVELERS HAVE TOLD TEENAGERS ABOUT THE ECOLOGICAL STATE OF THE WORLD’S OCEANS.
On the 18th of February the crew of the “Russian Ocean Way” met with school students from Tomsk. Evgeny Kovalevski and Stanislav Berezkin, being on an online-call from Brazil, answered the questions from the concerned students. Children of the Tomsk Academical Lyceum learned about the ecological state of World’s oceans directly from first-hand — the experienced sailors.
Today, on 18th of February, schoolers from Tomsk were lucky to participate in a “living lesson” of geography. Students of the Tomsk Academical Lyceum were meeting online with the crew of the world trip of the Tomsk regional branch of the Russian Geography Society to interview them. Despite the fact that Evgeny Kovalevski and Stanislav Berezkin are quite busy with their preparation to next step of their world trip, they managed to find some time to discuss with the students the problem of the ecology of the World’s oceans. The meeting was organised with the help of Yulia Kaluzhnaya — the leader of the coastal centre of the expedition.
Kovalevski and Berezkin answered teenagers’ questions about the level of the pollution of the ocean with plastic and oil products and also told how to deal with the garbage when you are on a catamaran far from any land.
— Have you seen litter islands during your sailing?
— We have not, at least not during this expedition and the previous one. Though, we do remember that most of the garbage we met in Dominicana’s waters. There is so much garbage in this part of the Caribbean that it looks like a very thick soup. The same situation is near the shores of Indonesia.
The travellers were talking to students of the lyceum for an hour and after that they had to return to their business. The head of the expedition Evgeny Kovalevski showed readiness to meet with school students from the Tomsk region more often. In the end sailors wished teenagers luck in their studying of geography and foreign languages, noticing that those subjects would lay a base of an interesting many-sided life for every person.
We would like to remind you that the expedition of the Tomsk regional branch of RGS “Russian Ocean Way” started 07/01/2021 from Kronstadt. Two Siberians went around the world on a unique boat — a miniature sailing inflatable catamaran. In December the crew completed the hardest crossing of the Atlantic ocean and at the moment they are preparing to go around South America. Their intention is to round Cape Horn which is known for its severe climate conditions and gigantic 18-metres high waves.
